During the Civil War, the North turned to outlawed sorcery to defeat the South, transforming their soldiers into horrific creatures called Incarnates. Despite achieving victory, those who survived were ostracized and even slaughtered, as society feared and misunderstood the Incarnates. Years later, Nancy Schaal Bancroft seeks vengeance on the individual who murdered her Incarnate father. Armed with a weapon, she discovers that he, too, is an Incarnate and has a sinister motive for his actions. Hank, another Incarnate, teams up with Schaal as they embark on a journey to uncover the truth behind her father's demise and the destiny of their kind. Along the way, Schaal comes to comprehend why Incarnates must be taken out by their own kind once they lose their humanity.
